One of the methods that have been in practice for a long time now is the use of mechanical traps, often called wooden snap traps. These traps are cheap and easy to place, but they have to be laid with proper bait. However, they can hurt the children and pets and hence have to be carefully placed. The limitation with such rat traps is that they can catch one rat at one time. Though, the benefit of this technique is that it is not hazardous like chemical pesticides.
A glue board can also be used to catch and remove rats. They can be wooden or made of cardboard with their surface smeared with glue. You can also put baits on the surface by scattering some food pieces to attract the rats. When rats access the food, the glue sticks to them and they can’t get off the board. This eventually results in their starving to death.

If there are common garbage bins or dumping places near your residence then you need to find a way to get them removed, as in their presence your home is highly likely to be affected by cockroaches.
Finally, if you have to use chemical substances despite all these precautions then go for less strong chemicals such as boric acid instead of the harmful ones normally available in the market.
