What Is Aromatherapy? What Does Aromatherapy Do?

Have you heard about aromatherapy but really don’t know what it is? Or are you just confused about where aromatherapy came from and what it’s use is? Lets consider a little about the history and uses of aromatherapy.

The word aromatherapy was 1st coined by chemist in France in’20. It refers to the use of various plant substances and in particular oils which are distilled from plants which are called essential oils. The chemist was called Maurice Gattefosse and it was he who discovered some of the healing quality of essential oils after a fire in his laboratory. At the time of the fire he had lavender oil there as he was studying the use of essential oils in healing.

One of the results of fire at the laboratory was that his arm was burnt so he put his arm into the back of lavender oil. The experienced immediate pain relief and found that the burns healed extremely fast without scarring.

Other scientist followed up on the work of Maurice Gattefosse during world war 2 when many soldiers were burnt and also experienced all sorts of other life changing wounds. Research was done into the use of essential oils on burns and various other wounds.

The art of aromatherapy under different names has been around for thousands of years. It is the art of using scents from various plant substances, now essential oils, to produce pleasant and sometimes healing effects on people with various conditions.

Whilst aromatherapy has restorative properties it is not considered to be a “cure” for any illnesses. Rather it is geared towards helping sufferers cope with their conditions and to help improve their psychological stresses by improving their mental states. If it is claimed that aromatherapy actually cures illnesses this is incorrect.

It seems that there are indeed a range of psychological benefits from the beautiful scents derived from essential plant oils and these psychological benefits to assist sufferers of illnesses to cope with their disease. Whilst aromatherapy does not cure the disease it does elevate the mood, reduce fear and stress and relax disease sufferers. This helps them cope with the illness.

And in some cases aromatherapy can also help reduce a sufferers dependence on prescription drugs such as painkillers, indigestion tablets and sleeping tablets.

Various different scents from essential oils have a different effect of different people. For example different perfumes can have differing affects on different people. Some people will love a particular scent will feel relaxed whilst others will not. These psychological benefits of aromatherapy are very personal. Many people use the principles of aromatherapy without knowing it. For instance many people in use various oils and perfumes and lotions in their homes for the nice smell. That’s what aromatherapy is about.

Maybe it’s you that has an illness that you are dealing with. I won’t claim that aromatherapy will be a magic cure. It isn’t. However don’t give up on aromatherapy just because it won’t cure the disease. It can still do many magical things fir your overall psychological well-being and mental state. It is that affect will help you deal with your illness.

Information On Rheumatoid Arthritis – 3 Coping Techniques To Help New Sufferers

A diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is likely to leave you very confused and completely overwhelmed. It is time to take a breath and to assess where you are and what the next step is.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a well documented illness and it is easy to sink in the vast amount of information out there. Here are three simple tips which I hope will help you to find your starting point.

1. Every patient is different. There are no two people in the world the same. The same it true for patients – there are no two patients who will respond exactly the same way. However tempting it may be you must try not to compare your treatment or progress against others.

2. Pain management – whatever your belief on pain relief and medication, it is essential that you understand the reasons for pain relief. You may be able to cope with the pain, but if you are using all your energies to handle your pain your quality of life will be suffering. Living with pain can cause a sufferer to become emotional and even irrational; this will put extreme pressure on both yourself and those around you. Pain can affect your life in many different ways, consider these when you choose your pain management.

3. Physical changes – there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, but that does not mean that you will see your body change as per a text book description. There are medications and lifestyle changes which will affect how your body handles the arthritis. It is important to understand the overall picture of your health, but it is most important to deal with each aspect separately and not to get overwhelmed.

Basically you need to work towards the best possible quality of life. Rheumatoid arthritis does not need to be an end to your active life.

Taking advice from other people is important, but it is most important to be sure of your actions and believe in what you are doing. If you are unsure of something then it is not likely to be successful.

Remember, a negative environment breeds negativity, so surround yourself with positive people.
